Software Support for OP3/3T: Questions & Answers.

  1. Varangk Eclair Aug 11, 2017

    Varangk, Aug 11, 2017 :
OP3T/3 will receive Android O as the last update is quite different from your previous statement that OP3T/3 will receive Android O.

This statement proves launching phone in December and ceasing Support in end of December. That's not even a year's support for OP3T users. OEM manufacturers have been supporting minimum two Android version before discontinuing support.

**12months Timeframe of OS support is quite less**

    LOL, are you serious?

Not even Google promises the latest stable Android version for more than 2 years, let alone 3.

What does it mean "NEVER SETTLE" if the only thing you can do is using unofficial roms for getting last android version? This can be done with every phone in the world. Here it's just more easy, but I thought there would be more updates. I can't buy new phone every year...

Even though I don't use off screen gestures, I wonder why can't we have the new gestures added for the OP3/3T? I don't see how these types of gestures have any tie with hardware. Even some custom ROMs have additional off screen gestures.

Buy one then. Oh wait, you can't.

Like it or not, OnePlus phones are actually the closest thing you have to a Nexus device.

It's a hypothetical timeline, looking at Industry standards are minimum 15 months though OEMs are providing till 18 months. Since Patchworks are not considered are major System Updates, the timeline would be same around 12-14 months.
Far below industry average for "Flagship Killer" devices

Qualcomm doesn't provide drivers for more than 2 years for their SOCs. Blame them.

Thanks, you just took the words from my mouth of what I was saying to him. :D

I will just add that only Apple doesn't do it, and that's because they can control the entire product line. But the truth is that sometimes that long updates time still comes with a price. My ipad 3 became so slow with the latest updates that just became unusable and I had to sell it. Planned obsolescence, sometimes takes make shapes.

I’m not sure why people are upset with this news. Getting the 2 next Android versions after the phone is released and then getting played out by security updates is pretty standard in the phone industry. There is no surprise here, no let down, the only let down would be if OnePlus failed on this promise or failed to deliver bug fixes for Android O, and even this would be a step up from what they did with the OP2.

The only other phone vendor you can get more than 18/24 month support is Apple, so if you want a “minimum of 2 year” support go to them.

First off, appreciate that you are addressing some of the main questions about the op3 and the beta program.
It seems to me that oneplus has felt the blow back from your shunning of the op2 and opx. Maybe if you would have shown some concern about these products, you have not lost the support and faith of some of the consumers. That being said, maybe just maybe if this open policy continues I will consider buying another oneplus product in the future. I have not bought a phone from oneplus in 2 years.
As of right now you still have not renewed my faith but headed in the right direction.

So, you think "Never Settle" means they will maintain phones for a longer period than Google itself, the one developing Android?

You clearly have no clue as to how software development works. There are devices that cannot be updated for even one year, because the hardware stops getting drivers, yet you think three years of updates "can be done with every phone in the world". LOL

So you need to buy a new phone just because it stops getting new Android versions? Why is that?

David: What are you planning with regards to security updates for the OP3/3T?

Oliver: In keeping with the original schedule, we planned to update OxygenOS on the OP3/3T to version 4.5, with the latest security patch level update, in the next 1-2 months. However, some feedback from the community caught our attention and we decided to tweak it a little bit. We’ll split the update into two parts. First, we’ll release the latest security patch level to August, which will be released soon. The OxygenOS 4.5 update will be released at the scheduled time.

wait wait wait. hold your horses. does that mean that we will have to wait ANOTHER 1-2 months got OOS 4.5?
