    SOLVED See post #13

Wife was watching a video there just now and her phone has shut down completely and won't boot back up. It had 40% charge in it so it's not the battery, plugged it into charger anyway but nothing happening. Tried getting into recovery but it's completely dead. Anyone any ideas what the problem could be? It's an OP3.

@Rizla Well either the battery and the charging circuit have died or the motherboard is a goner.

Try to keep it plugged in for about an hour and see if it shows signs of life.

After you've had it on the charger for awhile, try plugging it into a PC and see if maybe it still recognizes the device in some way.

Same thing happened to my op3 twice already. Lastest system with root.

According to my experience it will not react to anything but slowly drain out the bettery and complete shut down.

Then you can recharge it and it will work just fine as normal.

    Not sure why.

    Nope, I think it's dead

I think it's a goner it's been on charge for nearly an hour. I'll pull out the laptop tomorrow and hook it up and see if I can get it booted up with that.

    Tried that, didn't work.

I'll need to do that tomorrow is 2am.

Tried that until my finger was sore, didn't work.

    It's not rooted I don't think, I can't really remember now.

Cheers guys, it's still dead and no heat coming off it at all. I'll try plugging it into the laptop tomorrow and report back.

Unplug it until the bettery is completely dead. Then plug it, hopefully it will boot after a short while of recharge.

you can try qualcomm emergency download mode using volume up and power up. it forces phone to boot via the download mode partition. worth a try I guess. but it does sound like it's soul is flying to the heavens.

So, I had tried holding volume down and power buttons to boot into recovery mode as I was certian this is was the proper way to do It, it didn't work. Anyway I tried holding the volume up and power buttons like you suggested and the phone booted into what looked like fastboot mode and from there I got it to power up. Cheers man, you're a legend.

I'm still a bit lost as to what could've caused this to happen though. She said the phone wasn't overheating or acting strangely before it powered off.

There has been an uptick in posts about this issue since the Oreo update. My phone does this as well randomly ever since the first Oreo update. I even went back to nougat and it STILL does this.

    Will do mate :)

This is the first time this has happened to her device, she's on oreo build 180129. I don't know how many Oreo builds there has been for the OP3 as she just updates it herself and she can't remember either.

Anyway all good now so thanks guys :)

no problem. glad i could help. :)

hmm, thermal throttling could mostly be the cause. It sometimes throttles it very rapidly that the other internal I/o commands in the kernel get messed up. this usually affects the power button first, since it's hard coded, followed by the volume buttons.

EDL is usually a stray partition to recovery the phone from the hard brick, which the manufacturers use. it's usually protected. but OP hasn't issued a patch yet (your luck :) ). it mostly starts with CVE-.
