OnePlus 5 price hike, is it worth it?

  1. SJBoss Jelly Bean Jun 17, 2017

    SJBoss, Jun 17, 2017 :
hie Everyone Had So much time to kill so I came up with this
let's see if the price hike for OnePlus 5 is Justified.

(FYI - I'll be comparing the base models for pricings)

    OnePlus One

the OnePlus one came with a Price Tag of US $299 (16 GB)
US $349 (64 GB) in 2014, At that time Flagship Devices from Apple, Samsung And Other Major OEM's Had these Price Tags.

    iPhone 6 - $649 (Unlocked)
    Samsung Galaxy S5 - $649 (Unlocked)
    HTC One (M8) - $649 (Unlocked)
    Sony Xperia Z2 - $749 (Unlocked)

So OnePlus One was Priced Almost Half at the Price while offering similar Specs but with Invite system which was not so good, and it wasn't easy to get your hands on.
    (but they sure needed it)

OnePlus 2 Launched with a Higher price of $329 in 2015, while a bit higher than OnePlus one it was still Affordable and almost half the price of Flagship Devices while offering similar specs.
(let's not talk about the ill-fated SD 810 and it's Heating issues )

Same Happened with the OnePlus 3 and 3T, they were also priced a bit higher, while discontinued 3T is Still Available at the price of $439.99 .

OnePlus have a higher price tag with every Device they offer but isn't every OEM?
Galaxy S8 and S8 were priced at $720 and $840 respectively while S5 had a price tag of 649$.

Also the Second hand market of OnePlus Devices is Very strong. (OnePlus 2 is a bit down now)
but that is not the case with other major OEM's
[bought iPhone 7 (32GB ) when it came out for 72k in India. and now it's available as low as 64k for (128 GB)] now if I'll try to sell it it won't get me half of the money I spent on it.
same with the Samsung, S7 Edge had 56k launch price, now available as low as 40k.

    yea there is some drawbacks

    1. Camera - personally I don't care about camera much. for me it's good. but I don't think anyone shares my opinion. OnePlus is redifining Camera with OnePlus 5.

    2. Full HD display panels instead of 2k (which is the Standard of Flagship Android devices) but as they say 1080p is enough if you are not into VR (not mainstream)

3 no water resistant - One less thing to worry about if there is at least IP 67 Rating

Also newer Components means higher Prices,
so if you look and give it a thought OnePlus Devices are still somewhat half of the price of the Current Flagship phones
while having strong second hand value.

they're not as Affordable as they were Once. but they never Claimed to be the same.

Also you Shouldn't stick to Brands, if something looks appeling go for it.

    [Update]
OnePlus 5 Prices around the world..

    pricings for India

    37,999/- for 8/128 GB

    U.K. Pricings

    449/- for 6/64 GB
    499/- for 8/128 GB

    U.S.A. pricings

    479/- for 6/64 GB
    539/- for 8/128 GB

Well no I didnt read it, but I skimmed. The Intro Title says it all. If the price is 500 Euros/750 Canadian ill wait until a few other like Note 8(better) or Axon 8(cheaper) are out. Next ill decided from there. 256gb version would have me sold though.

what i think is it's going to be around $470-$490 (for base Model) anything more than that will be inappropriate coz there's not much new to offer other than Camera and SD 835.

Yeah that is the highest they should go, I mean budget right? Flagship killer, not actual new flagship. I bought my OPO because of community support and price. Even if those features are not inherited at the fullest, they would compel me to buy OP5. I mean in terms of hardware SOC, camera, and battery our your main features. In the following are IPX/audio output/design/screen. I don't see any, or more than one, compromises in secondary features. By my standards. If you add in stock Android it will be flagship level, hopefully not price.

I would say that the OP 5 is more of a sidegrade, not much changed with 2 components different and a body "inspired", cough, cough, by apple. if they raise the price over 450 with no further improvements i will not be impressed.

As for new, better stuff costs more that is not always the case, plenty of phone manufactures launched the new model for the same price as the previous model. Also this is seen in other mobile departments like laptops where a laptop with a 970m was similar in price if not more expensive then the new ones with when they came out with a gtx 1060 for example( sure prices have shifted by now, and this was in my area where I live other places could have been different). My point is that if they don't bring some serious extra stuff to it then it should not be worth more then the previous model, add water resistance, stereo speakers, a screen with less top and bottom bezels and something else and then I might be willing to fork over some extra bucks, else might as well just get the OP3T, well if not for the possibility of no more updates when OP 5 comes out.

I've always said, that if they approach the $550 price point that they'll be in trouble. There are too many options that are too close to that price point. Before, it was a no-brainer, the price outweighed any of the negatives. Now it's not that easy

yup, I don't think if they can offer something like OnePlus One again, also Community is just a gimmick now, they are a big Company now, they act like Celebs now (they used to actually Interect with community Users, I've been scrolling through their profiles)

the main reason for price hike are the newer qhd panels are costly and they aren't getting any cheaper because of the demand

Just wait and see... All they really are selling is the new Snapdragon chip. That's all OnePlus has... Use to be that and a unique design but that's gone.

If the basic unit crosses the $500 threshold, they're in real BIG trouble.
Over the past year, Apple, Samsung, HTC, Lenova(Motorola) and several other mfr's saw their phone sales slip 15-20%. The smartphone industry is in a price squeeze with over-supply and lower demand.

    Time will tell.

Made your title less click-bait-y. This is because no one knows what the price of the OP5 will be, yet. 3 more days! ;-)
