let's remove the audio jack [Devil's Advocate] hypothetical

let's stick to the point and keep the hate speech for another thread.
we all know the " Apple is evil/stupid and wants to screw over its clients" rant.

Apple makes a lot of claims as to why the audio jack had to die.
most of them sound suspiciously like bullshit.
I mean, the whole "aaaand it features an audio jack!" - thing is so last year, let's get over it.

I'd like to hear from the OnePlus engineers or staffers people that actually know the engineering costs of putting it, hopefully from the Pete himself.

OnePlus: Is there an ounce of merit to this trend? is there anything awesome you could do with the real estate taken up by the audio jack?

we won't take it as a threat that the OP5 won't have it.
but I would like a honest opinion from someone I ( and the community ) respect.

    A hypothetical really.
so you remove the jack, whats the upside? in what circumstance does this make sense?
    you ditch the entire DAC?
    save power?
    lighter phone?
better reception strength due to less cross-signal?
    anything AT ALL good??

For my part, all the headphones I've ever used always end up sheared after a few months anyways so I mainly use my car's bluetooth.

If you have a valid reason that adds functionality, and you provide an adapter so people can still plug in their head phones, then okay. If you don't meet that criteria, then screw you!

oh it was, but nobody believed them.
In their defense, they crammed a huge vibrator inside. excuse me, haptic engine ¬¬
I was playing with my sister's iphone 7 and damn, that vibrator feels really nice when you press the main non-button. very sharp twitch , like a pop instead of a thrum.

With wired headphones u can just plug in anytime & listen to music.

With wireless ones, u have yet another thing to charge & being left with low battery when u need it the most will be frustrating.

so is the doorknob. That's simplistic.
Just because something is old, it doesn't mean it's useless.
besides there are a few audiophiles out there that claim the electrical roughness inherent to the analog interface gives music its "soul" they say bluetooth doesnt "feel" right.

Seems like a zero sum discussion.
and that fact is, Apple did give us proper wifi and usb ecosystem. History says they're on to something.
I'm not sure if l want my op5 without a jack, though.

    ok here's my opinion.

they say the headphone jack helped with water resistant. well there are phones with a headphone jack and water resistance. samshit has water resistance. the bigger vibrator? old one was fine. but hey, bigger the better right? but look at this:

    1495126142201.jpg
they increased the battery MAH in the iPhone 7. up above is a iPhone 6s. they managed to reduce the physical size of the battery in the 7 if I remember correctly. but 200 mAh is not a big difference. so take out the 200 to reduce even more and find a way to position the motor just right so you can fit in that tiny headphone jack

remove the audio jack but either the phone should come bundled with good quality headphones or provide a seperate usb c port with hifi dac for using headphones with usb c connector

They'd have to pass along the cost of the headphones then and as far as a separate usb c port, you're just replacing one "jack" with another. Now if they bundled an adapter that allowed you to use wired headsets AND possibly have a USB C pass-through...

I feel like wired headphones are so widely used still and we haven't completely switched to wireless headphones. Plus most of the best headphones are wired.
