Can somebody please explain to me why you would possibly want to disable encryption on your device after unlocking the bootloader and rooting? What is the true purpose of flashing "no-verity-opt-encrypt"? #confused

    1. Root for OnePlus 5: "SuperSU" or"Magisk Beta" - what better to choose?

    2. Just starting with Android, I have a question about Decrypt Data (Flash DM Verity Zip) what advantage or disadvantage gives me this option?

Based on previous replies it seems you would want to Decrypt data if you want to use MULTIROM. If you do not want to use MULTIROM, then ignore that.

choice is yours, both do the same at the base core. if you wish to use android pay go magisk beta to hide superuser from android pay (same with other apps such as pokemon go), magisk also has a module addon for adblocking that i like

Let me make it clear once you are rooted, you have to flash the full zip to upgrade the OS, OTA flash will fail as we have made modifications to the system partition.[/QUOTE]

Tell me if i only Unlock Bootloader, but nothing else (no custom recovery and root) will i be able to use the "standard" OTA updates like before?

    How to update phone correctly?
I have an unlocked phone, loaded TWRP, made Root by Magisk.
There is a message that awaits update 4.5.3.
I've already downloaded 4.5.3 on the phone (OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_008_all_1706262145_3301f08afa9145a6.zip)
    What's next?

    //edit
    1. DL new FW version (1,58GB) + Magisk (zip)
    2. Run Revovery TWRP
    3. Install FW + Magisk
    4. Clean Dalvik & Cache

The most critical component of all these posts above is TWRP. Neither the Chinese nor the XDA provided TWRP are past "work-in-progress" states. Bluntly, they don't function correctly. Until TWRP can nandroid backup and restore any of the boot/data/etc partitions, and reboot without problem, it's only of use for installing things. For some of us, that's a dodgy notion if you can't restore to ground 0 without a problem.

I might be something fairly simple that's not been accounted for like SELINUX permissions or perhaps restoring while in "permissive mode" rather than in "enforcing mode". With a nice device like the OP5, I'd as soon wait until this most basic of components (custom recovery) has reached a completed state until changing from stock. I'm guessing this will take another week or (well, whatever it takes).

Of course there are many who don't care whether they can restore their backups because they haven't had to yet, but they'll care as soon as they have to.

When I see so many posts that say things like "How to install or update phone correctly", well there's no "correct" way until TWRP has reached a not only stable but working under all conditions state, which of course means // the ability to restore all partitions without errors and reboot them.

    ------------------

I'm not saying there's not useful stuff in this thread, because it's full of useful stuff. All it lacks is a really solid/functioning version of TWRP. I realize that we all want to jump on this cool 'geek/dev' phone and mod the hell out of it and no one wants to fill it with personalized data before unlocking which will wipe data thus causing more work to re-do steps.

Just think of how much time you'll waste trying to restore your base copy from nandroid since that functionality isn't working. ..

OnePlus’s latest flagship offering, OnePlus 5 is simply “enough”, anyone would ask for in an Android Smartphone. With 8GB of RAM & Snapdragon 835, it has really got no competition left in the market. While the Smartphone is the fastest among Galaxy S8 & HTC U11, it surely comes with more than just “Speed”. As we all know, OnePlus always encourages new developments for their devices and allow their users to Root their device without voiding the warranty.

If you’re one of those, who loves to tinker with their devices & you have recently bought a brand new OnePlus 5, we have a good news for you; A fully functional TWRP Recovery & Root is out for OnePlus 5. While rooting the OnePlus 5 won’t be for “Performance improvements”, but it will surely allow you to install Custom ROMs, apply themes, try out the latest Android O previews and that too without voiding device’s warranty. So without anymore time, let’s just jump onto the procedure of Rooting OnePlus 5.

    Also Read:

    Prerequisites:

    1. A OnePlus 5 with at least 50% of battery
    2. Original Type-C USB Cable of OnePlus 5.
    3. Minimal ADB Tool (Download link and Installation Procedure is given in the link) & Fastboot Drivers.
    4. Backup all your Contacts, Apps, Images and everything. Unlocking the device might erase the Internal storage.
    5. TeamWin Recovery Project (TWRP): Download
    6. Disabled Forced Encryption (no-verity-opt-encrypt): Download
    7. SuperSU Root File: Download

    Rooting Procedure of OnePlus 5
    [IMG]
    How to Root OnePlus 5
    1. Unlocking Bootloader: Opens the door to System files of your device. This allows you to flash images onto the main system partitions of the phone.
    2. Installing a Custom Recovery: A custom recovery is flashed onto the recovery partition of the device and overwrites the stock recovery that exists by default. Custom recoveries bring lots of functionality and allows you to perform wipes, install flashable zips, create full backups of your NAND (Nandroid backup), and various other features. An unlocked bootloader is needed to install a custom recovery.
    3. Rooting: You can gain root by either flashing via recovery a pre-rooted custom ROM, or flashing a zip containing the SuperSU binaries. A custom recovery is necessary to do this. You can unroot your Android device in just one click.

    • fastboot oem unlock
Step 9. Now you’ll see an “Unlock Bootloader” prompt, press Vol button to Select & Power button to select the “Yes” option.

Step 1. Download the TWRP img file from the Prerequisites section at the top.

    Android Debug Bridge (ADB)
Step 3. Boot your device into Fastboot Mode (Press volume + power button) and connect your device to PC through USB cable.

Step 4. Launch the ADB Command Prompt Window and type the below command to flash the TWRP img file.

    • fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.1.1-0-oneplus5.img
    • If you have changed the File name, replace "twrp-3.1.1-0-oneplus5.img" with that "filename.img" in the command.
Step 5. Once the TWRP Recovery is flashed successfully, disconnect your device and boot into TWRP mode (Power + Volume Down button).

You have successfully flashed TWRP Recovery in your OnePlus 5. But you need to disable Forced Encryption to gain Root Access.

Disable Forced Encryption in OnePlus 5
Just like every other Flagship devices this days, OnePlus also comes with dm-verity check and forced encryption enabled. Although this offers a layer of Security, it doesn’t allow you to gain root access. Along with that, encryption also eats up Performance & Storage for keys. If you want to gain root access, first you need to disable forced encryption before flashing anything through TWRP. It’s a pretty simple step.

Step 1. Download the “no-verity-opt-encrypt” file from the Prerequisites section and transfer it in your device’s Internal storage.

Step 2. Turn off your device and boot into TWRP Recovery(Power + Volume Down button).

Step 3. Select Install > Locate the no-verity-opt-encrypt file > Swipe right to Confirm Flashing.

You have successfully unlocked the Bootloader of your OnePlus 5 device. Now you can install custom Softwares in to your System files through custom recovery or gain root Access.

and how do you think they get that functionality? testing, yes that's right... we jump on the 'geek/dev' and we test and report issues, submit logs. All this so people who complain can complain about something else... or if it doesn't get done complain they don't have it.

might be why this post was made in the development section of the forums.
